ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the safety-related riding behaviors of 0-to 6-year-old children and to analyze their parents' awareness of the safe riding thereof. Methods Self-administered questionnaires were used to make investigations on the parents of the 0-to 6-year-old children described as follows.Several 0-to 3-year-old children's parents who owned private cars and sent their children to schools/back home by cars daily were randomly selected from the planned immunization/children's health clinic of 10 community health service centers in Changning District of Shanghai, the parents of these children were surveyed.Several 4-to 6-year-old children's parents who owned private cars and sent their children to schools/back home by cars daily were randomly selected from the kindergartens therein, the parents of these children were surveyed.SPSS 17.0 was used in relevant statistical analyses. Results A total of 3 509 persons were investigated. The means of their riding in private cars were shown as follows, in order of proportion, from the highest to the lowest: using child restraint system(CRS) (44.1%), sitting in laps of adults(28.1%), sitting by themselves with seatbelts(18.0%)and sitting by themselves without seatbelts (9.8%);with the increase of age, the proportions of using CRS and sitting in laps of adults decreased and those of sitting by themselves increased.Almost 90% of child passengers were habitually rear-seated, but 1.8% thereof sat in the CRS seats installed in front and 7.2% thereof simply sat in co-pilot seats in front without any safety restraints. The overall awareness rate of the parents for the core knowledge of the CRS seats was 67.1%, only 23.8% of the respondents surveyed knew all the core knowledge. The rate of using CRS seats by parents was positively correlated with the relevant knowledge and attitudes of the parents for CRS seats(x2=357.8, P<0.001).For the parents who believed that using CRS seats is the safest way of riding, the rate of using CRS seats by their children was also the highest.Parents with higher levels of education and higher incomes tended to have higher levels of awareness. Conclusion Compared with foreign developed countries, the rate of using CRS seats by 0-to 6-year-old children is relatively low in Changning District. The rate of using CRS seats by parents is closely related to the relevant knowledge and attitudes of the parents for CRS seats.Parents have a low level of awareness and misunderstanding of safe riding. It is necessary to strengthen the publicity and education, especially for the awareness of children's safe riding for families with relatively low levels of education, thus urging parents to take more reliable children's safe riding measures so as to ensure thesafety of children's riding.

ABSTRACT

Emerging evidence indicates that ischemic preconditioning (IPC) induces autophagy which attenuates myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, the precise mechanisms remain complex and unclear. The present study was to investigate which autophagy pathway was involved in the cardioprotection induced by IPC, so that we can acquire an attractive treatment way for ischemic heart disease. Adult male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into sham group, I/R group and IPC group. IPC was induced with three cycles of 5 min regional ischemia alternating with 5 min reperfusion in a heart I/R model. Samples were taken from the center of the infracted heart and examined by using the electron microscopy, the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated nick end-labeling (TUNEL) method, Western blotting and co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP). A large number of autophagic vacuoles were observed in the cardiomyocytes of IPC group as compared with I/R group. LC3-II formation, an autophagy marker, was up-regulated in IPC group as compared with I/R group (P<0.05). Moreover, the interaction between Beclin 1 and Bcl-2 was significantly increased in IPC group as compared with I/R group (P<0.01). It was also found that IPC decreased I/R-induced apoptosis (P<0.01). These results suggest that IPC inhibits Beclin 1-dependent excessive autophagy in reperfusion phase and cooperates with anti-apoptosis pathway to diminish the cell death induced by the myocardial I/R injury.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUNDTamsulosin, an alpha-1 receptor antagonist, has been demonstrated effective in promoting distal ureteral stone passage and in reducing pain associated with stone expulsion. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of tamsulosin in comparison with nifedipine and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) on the expulsion rate of distal ureteral stones at different sizes.

METHODSWe assigned 314 patients to three categories: I, the stone with maximal diameter of 4.0 - 5.9 mm; II, 6.0 - 7.9 mm, and III, 8.0 - 9.9 mm. Patients in each category were randomly subdivided into three treatment subgroups: group A (nifedipine group), group B (tamsulosin group), and group C (ESWL group). Stone-free rate and the dose of analgesics were recorded weekly during the 4-week follow-up period.

RESULTSThree hundred and three patients completed the study. The results showed that nifedipine and tamsulosin treatments promoted a small (4 - 8 mm, categories I and II) stone expulsive rate that was comparable with ESWL treatment. Nonetheless, when the stone diameter was 8.0 - 9.9 mm, ESWL showed a greater stone free rate than nifedipine and tamsulosin treatments; no significant difference existed between the latter two therapies. Although the ESWL treatment group required the least analgesics, tamsulosin treatments required less pain medication than nifedipine (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONSTamsulosin treatment is recommended for patients with the stone diameter smaller than 8 mm because of its feasibility, effectiveness and safety. ESWL is more appropriate than tamsulosin therapy for the patients whose stones are larger than 8 mm.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo explore the pharmacologic effects of Chinese medicine Bushen Huayu Jiedu Compound Recipe (BSHYJDR) in drug-resistance cells of lung cancer.

METHODSHuman lung adenocarcinoma A549/DDP cell strain was selected, serum pharmacology and flow cytometer (FCM) method were adopted, S180 tumor-bearing mice and normal mice were given, through gastrogavage, different doses of a decocted concentration of BSHYJDR. Serum from the abdominal aorta was taken to observe the effect of drug-serum on cisplatin (DDP) concentration, free Ca2+ concentration and the expression of lung drug-resistance protein LRP-56 in A549/DDP cells.

RESULTSCompared with the drug-resistance group, the intracellular DDP concentration in the group taking a high dose and the normal group of Chinese medicine showed significant difference (P<0.05), while no significant difference was found in the low-dose group (P>0.05). Compared with the drug-resistance group, the Ca2+ concentration in cells and the expression of LRP in lung cancer drug-resistance cells A549/DDP of the high-dose group, the low-dose group and the normal group of Chinese medicine were significantly different (all P<0.01), the LRP expression of the normal group was obviously higher than that of the drug-resistance group (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONIt was indicated that serum containing Chinese medicine BSHYJDR in the tumor-bearing mice and the normal mice had certainly different, tumor-bearing mice serum containing could improve drug concentration in lung cancer drug-resistance cells, prevent the inflow and release of Ca2+, and inhibit the expression of the drug-resistance gene in the lung cancer drug-resistance cells, which might be the mechanism of BSHYJDR in enhancing the efficacy in reversing and inhibiting tumor.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of green light laser in complex posterior urethral stricture after surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Methods Green light laser was applied in treating 20 cases of complex iatrogenic posterior urethral stricture.Of these cases,12 had false passages,5 had more than 2 strictures and 5 had concurrently urethratresia. The scar tissues were transure- thrally vaporized and resected. The in-dwelling urethral catheter time was 1-2 months after operation. Results All the patients were initially cured without serious complications. The mean operative time was 39 rain (range,30-65 min).During the follow-up of 2-10 months,1 case had mild incontinence:another case (Q_(max)<9ml/s 2 weeks after surgery) got satisfactory results(Q_(max)>15ml/s)after the scheduled urethral dilatation. The other 18 cases were treated successfully and voided fluently with postoperative Q_(max)>15ml/s in all. Conclusions It is suggested that transurethral green light laser procedure is not only safe and ef- fective, but also simple and minimally iuvasive for complex posterior urethral stricture following surgical treat- ment of BPH.
